The passive

être plus the past form (the participle), which agrees with the subject. The person who does it comes after par. A passé composé with être, such as elle est née, is not a passive.

Examples

  • La maison a été construite. The house was built.
  • Les lettres ont été écrites. The letters were written.

How it works

The subject receives the action. Someone else does it.

The form

être in the tense you need, plus the past form (the participle), agreeing with the subject.
Present: Le colis est livré. The parcel is delivered.
Passé composé: La maison a été construite. The house was built. (a été, ont été)
Future: Les lettres seront écrites. The letters will be written.
Feminine and plural show on the participle: livré, livrée, livrés, livrées. construit, construite. écrites.

The agent

par

La maison a été construite par mon père. The house was built by my father.
par is the usual word for the person or thing that does it.

Not a passive

Elle est allée uses être because aller takes être. She went. Nobody "was gone" by someone.
Elle est née is the passé composé of naître, "she was born", not a passive of "someone bore her". It looks like the passive and is not one.
A true passive can be turned back into an active sentence with a direct object (the noun the verb acts on): On a construit la maison → La maison a été construite.
