How it works
Five small words, and each one answers a different time question. The "there is" il y a is a different lesson. Here il y a means "ago".
Still going on
depuis + present
J'habite ici depuis trois ans. I have lived here for three years (and I still do).
The French verb stays in the present.
Ago
il y a + passé composé
Je suis arrivé il y a trois ans. I arrived three years ago. It is finished.
Same words as "there is", different meaning: the time expression sits at the end, with a past verb.
A length
pendant, en, pour
pendant: how long a finished action lasted. J'ai travaillé pendant deux heures.
en: how long it took to finish. J'ai lu le livre en deux jours.
pour: the length you intend, with partir, venir, aller. Je pars pour une semaine.
In the future
dans
Je pars dans dix minutes. I leave in ten minutes.
Not après, and not en.
