Present tense · conjugation

How verbs change with the subject (conjugation): regular -er / -ir / -re verbs, plus the common irregulars être, avoir, aller, faire, prendre, venir, vouloir, pouvoir, devoir, savoir.

Examples

  • Je parle.I speak.
  • Nous prenons le bus.We take the bus.

How it works

The tense for what is happening now, what happens habitually, and general statements. Almost everything you say in French sits on this skeleton. Note that one French present covers both "I speak" and "I am speaking".

THREE REGULAR GROUPS, by the ending of the infinitive (the dictionary form: parler, finir, vendre).

-er verbs — the biggest group (parler, to speak):

je parleI speak
tu parlesyou speak
il/elle parlehe / she speaks
nous parlonswe speak
vous parlezyou (formal/pl.) speak
ils/elles parlentthey speak
Endings: -e / -es / -e / -ons / -ez / -ent

-ir verbs (finir, to finish):

je finis, tu finis, il finit,
nous finissons, vous finissez, ils finissent
Watch the -iss- in the plural — easy to forget.

-re verbs (vendre, to sell):

je vends, tu vends, il vend,
nous vendons, vous vendez, ils vendent
The il/elle form takes no ending at all: il vend.

The high-frequency irregulars

memorise these:

être (to be)

suis / es / est / sommes / êtes / sont

avoir (to have)

ai / as / a / avons / avez / ont

aller (to go)

vais / vas / va / allons / allez / vont

faire (to do, to make)

More -ir verbs without the -iss- of finir:

partir, sortir, dormir, sentir, servir drop the last consonant of the stem in je / tu / il:

je pars, tu sors, il dort, je sens, il sert — nous partons, ils dorment
ouvrir, offrir, souffrir end in -ir but take the -er endings:
j'ouvre, tu ouvres, il ouvre — nous ouvrons, ils ouvrent
courir (to run) and mourir (to die) have their own forms:
je cours, il court — nous courons, ils courent
il meurt, ils meurent — nous mourons

Learn these one by one; the plural stem often changes:

savoir (to know)je saisnous savonsvous savezils savent
voir (to see)je voisnous voyonsvous voyezils voient
croire (to believe)je croisnous croyonsvous croyezils croient
boire (to drink)je boisnous buvonsvous buvezils boivent

Watch vous dites — like vous faites, not "vous disez".

On

"we" in everyday speech

on takes the same verb form as il / elle:

On mange.We're eating.
On parle français. We speak French.
In conversation on replaces nous most of the time. It can also mean "people in general".

Spelling tweaks in some -er verbs, to keep the sound:

manger → nous mangeons(extra e keeps g soft)
commencer → nous commençons(ç keeps c soft)
acheter → j'achète(è in some forms)
