After prepositions · para mí, con él

After para, con, de, sin, en… use mí and ti; every other person keeps its subject form (él, ella, nosotros). con + mí / ti = conmigo / contigo.

Examples

  • El café es para mí.The coffee is for me.
  • Vivo con él.I live with him.
  • Ana vive conmigo.Ana lives with me.

How it works

After a preposition (para, con, de, sin, en, cerca de…), Spanish uses these pronouns:

mí — menosotros / nosotras — us
ti — youvosotros / vosotras — you (several)
él / ella — him / her
usted — you (polite)
ellos / ellas — them
ustedes — you (several, polite)

Only mí and ti are new; the rest look like the subject pronouns:

El café es para mí. — The coffee is for me.
Pienso en ti. — I think about you.
Vivo con él. — I live with him.
Hablamos de ella. — We talk about her.

Accents

mí (me) has an accent; mi (my) doesn't.
ti never has an accent.
él (him) has an accent; el (the) doesn't.

con + mí / ti become one word:

conmigo — with me
contigo — with you
But con él, con ella, con nosotros… stay two words.

Common mistakes

para yo →para mí
con mí →conmigo
para tí →para ti (no accent)
