Passive · wird gebaut
werden + the past participle (the ge- form: gebaut, geschrieben) when what happens matters more than who does it: Das Haus wird gebaut.
Examples
- Das Haus wird gebaut. The house is being built.
- Der Brief wurde gestern geschrieben. The letter was written yesterday.
How it works
The passive (saying what is done, not who does it) is built with werden + the past participle (the ge- form of the verb, like gebaut, geschrieben). The participle goes to the very end of the clause.
Present
werden in the present
Past
wurde
The letter was written yesterday.
Who did it
von + the dative (the form used after von)
The car is repaired by my father.
With a modal
muss gemacht werden A modal (können, müssen, dürfen, sollen) takes slot 2; the participle and then werden, unchanged, go to the very end:
werden stays as it is (never wird) because the modal is the verb that changes.
Three jobs of werden
look at what comes at the end
Common mistakes
ist gebaut = it is finished
von takes the dative
