Adjectives · agreement & position

Most adjectives go AFTER the noun and agree (m/f, sg/pl). BANGS adjectives go BEFORE: Beauty, Age, Number, Goodness, Size (beau, jeune/vieux, premier, bon, grand/petit).

Examples

  • Une voiture rouge.A red car.
  • Une belle journée.A beautiful day.

How it works

Two rules to get right: agreement and position.

Agreement

the adjective matches its noun in gender and number.

Feminine

add -e

petit → petitesmall
grand → grandebig
intelligent → intelligenteclever
Already ends in -e? No change: rouge (red) stays rouge.
-eux → -euseheureux → heureuse (happy)
-er → -èrecher → chère (dear)
-f → -veactif → active (active)

Plural

add -s

petits / petites / grandes / rouges
Already ends in -s or -x? No change: gros (fat) stays gros.
un livre intéressantan interesting book
une histoire intéressantean interesting story

Position

most adjectives come AFTER the noun:

une voiture rougea red car
un livre intéressantan interesting book
une étudiante française

a French student

A small group comes BEFORE. The memory hook is BANGS:

Beautybeau, joli
Agejeune, vieux, nouveau
Numberpremier, dernier, deuxième
Goodnessbon, mauvais
Sizegrand, petit, gros, long, haut
une belle journéea lovely day
un bon amia good friend
une petite maisona small house
le premier jourthe first day

If two adjectives apply, each keeps its own position:

une belle voiture rouge
a lovely red car

Irregulars

beau, vieux and nouveau have a special masculine form before a vowel or mute h:

beau / bel / belle / beaux / belles
vieux / vieil / vieille / vieux / vieilles
nouveau / nouvel / nouvelle / nouveaux
un BEL amia good-looking friend
(not "un beau ami")
un VIEIL hommean old man
(not "un vieux homme")
un NOUVEL amia new friend

Demonstratives

ce / cet / cette / ces ("this, that") They go before the noun and agree with it like any adjective:

ce livrethis book (m)
cet amithis friend (m, before a vowel)
cette maisonthis house (f)
ces livresthese books (plural)

A few adjectives change MEANING with position:

un grand hommea great man
un homme granda tall man
une vieille amiea long-standing friend
une amie vieillean elderly friend
ma propre voituremy own car
ma voiture propremy clean car

What you'll practise

  1. 1. Feminine agreement (-e)

Add -e for feminine. petit → petite, grand → grande. If already ends in -e, no change.

    • Une petite maison.A small house.
    • Une grande table.A big table.
  2. 2. Plural agreement (-s)

Add -s for plural. petits / petites / grandes. No extra -s when the masculine singular already ends in -s or -x (gros → gros, heureux → heureux). Written French uses de, not des, before a preposed adjective: de petits chats.

    • De petits chats.Small cats.
  3. 3. After the noun (default)

Most adjectives — colour, shape, nationality, longer adjectives — go AFTER the noun.

    • Un livre intéressant. An interesting book.
  4. 4. BANGS go before (Beauty / Age / Number / Goodness / Size)

Common ones: beau, joli, jeune, vieux, nouveau, premier, dernier, bon, mauvais, grand, petit.

    • Une belle journée.A beautiful day.
    • Un bon ami.A good friend.
  5. 5. Irregular forms · beau / vieux / nouveau

    beau → belle (f), vieux → vieille (f), nouveau → nouvelle (f). Special pre-vowel masc: bel/vieil/nouvel (un bel ami).

    • Une belle femme.A beautiful woman.
    • Un vieil homme. An old man.
  6. 6. ce / cet / cette / ces (this, that)

Before the noun, agreeing with it: ce (m), cet (m, before a vowel or mute h), cette (f), ces (plural).

    • Ce livre est intéressant. This book is interesting.
    • Cette maison est petite. This house is small.
