Commands from the subjunctive · ¡no hables! ¡hablemos!

Don't …! uses the present subjunctive (the verb form for wishes and doubts): ¡No hables! ¡No habléis! Polite usted commands and let's … use it too: ¡Hable! ¡Hablemos!

Examples

  • ¡No comas tanto!Don't eat so much!
  • ¡No lo hagas!Don't do it!
  • No se preocupe.Don't worry. (usted)

How it works

To tell a friend NOT to do something, use no + the present subjunctive (the verb form for wishes and doubts you learned in the last lesson), tú form:

hablar → ¡No hables! — Don't speak!
comer → ¡No comas! — Don't eat!
vivir → ¡No vivas aquí! — Don't live here!

The vowel swaps

-ar verbs take -es, -er / -ir verbs take -as. Irregular and stem-changing verbs keep their yo stem:

venir (vengo) → ¡No vengas tarde!
hacer (hago) → ¡No hagas eso!
dormir (duermo) → ¡No duermas!
decir (digo) → ¡No digas nada!

Pronouns go BEFORE the verb in a negative command:

¡Hazlo! → ¡No lo hagas! — Don't do it!
¡Levántate! → ¡No te levantes! — Don't get up!
¡Dímelo! → ¡No me lo digas! — Don't tell me!

Polite usted / ustedes: the same subjunctive form, for both yes and no:

¡Hable más despacio, por favor! — Please speak more slowly.
¡No hable! — Don't speak.
¡Pasen, por favor! — Come in, please. (ustedes)
Pronouns attach in the affirmative and go before in the negative:
¡Siéntese! / ¡No se preocupe!

Let's … (nosotros) and don't … to a group of friends (vosotros): the same subjunctive:

¡Hablemos español! — Let's speak Spanish!
¡No hablemos de eso! — Let's not talk about that.
ir is ¡Vamos! With nos the -s drops: ¡Sentémonos!
¡No habléis! ¡No comáis tanto! ¡No os preocupéis!
Never ✗ ¡No hablad! (that -d form is only for yes).

Common mistakes

¡No hazlo! →¡No lo hagas!
