Object pronouns · lo / la / le / me / te
Direct object (lo / la / los / las) and indirect object (le / les). Both go in front of the verb.
Examples
- Lo veo.I see him / it.
- Te llamo mañana.I'll call you tomorrow.
- Se lo doy.I give it to him.
How it works
Pronouns for the person or thing the action is done to (the direct object) — lo, la, los, las:
Pronouns for the person something is given, said or done to (the indirect object: "to / for whom") — le, les:
Position: BEFORE the conjugated verb (the one that changes with the subject), AFTER and ATTACHED to an infinitive (the dictionary form, like hablar), gerund (the -ando / -iendo form, like English -ing), or affirmative imperative (command form):
I'm eating it.
When BOTH pronouns appear, the "to whom" one comes first. And le/les become SE before lo/la/los/las:
I bought them (flowers) for them.
What you'll practise
1. Direct object pronouns (lo/la/los/las/me/te)
Replace the thing receiving the action.
- Lo compro.I buy it.
- Las veo.I see them (f).
2. Indirect object pronouns (le/les)
Replace 'to/for whom'.
- Le hablo a Marta.I talk to Marta.
- Les compré flores.I bought them flowers.
3. Pronoun position (before conjugated verb)
Place pronoun directly before the conjugated verb (the one that changes with the subject).
- No lo conozco.I don't know him.
- ¿Me oyes?Can you hear me?
4. le/les → se before lo/la/los/las
When le/les meets lo/la/los/las, le/les becomes SE (Se lo doy).
- Se lo doy.I give it to him.
- Se las muestro.I show them to her.
