Everyday fixed phrases

Chunks you say whole before you know the grammar inside them: ¿qué tal?, me llamo…, hace frío, por la mañana, en casa.

Examples

  • Hola, ¿qué tal?Hi, how are you?
  • Me llamo Ana.My name is Ana.
  • Hace frío.It's cold.

How it works

Some of the most frequent Spanish phrases are easier to learn as one block than to build word by word. Learn them as chunks now; later lessons explain the grammar inside them.

Greetings and courtesy

Hola, ¿qué tal? — Hi, how are you?
Buenos días. — Good morning.
Buenas noches. — Good evening / good night.
Por favor. — Please.
Muchas gracias. — Thank you very much.

Your name

Me llamo Ana. — My name is Ana.
¿Cómo te llamas? — What's your name?
Se llama Pablo. — His name is Pablo.
Word for word it is "I call myself Ana", so never add "es":
Mi nombre es llamo Ana.

Weather with hace

Hace frío. — It's cold.
Hace calor. — It's hot.
Hace sol. — It's sunny.
Hace buen tiempo. — The weather is nice.
Spanish says the weather "makes" cold, so it is hace, not es or está.
For "very", use mucho: Hace mucho calor.

Times of day

por la mañana — in the morning
por la tarde — in the afternoon
por la noche — at night
esta noche — tonight
todos los días — every day
Use por, not en: ✗ en la mañana (heard in Latin America, but por is the standard).

Places

en casa — at home
a casa — (going) home
en el trabajo — at work
No article before casa: ✗ en la casa (that means "in the house").
