过去进行时（was / were + 动词-ing）
说过去某一时刻正在做的事，常用来交代另一件事发生时的“背景”。
例句
- At eight o'clock last night, I was watching TV.昨晚八点，我正在看电视。
- I was cooking when the phone rang.我正在做饭，电话响了。
- What were you doing at three o'clock?三点钟的时候你在做什么？

构成

只变 was / were，-ing 不动
I wasn't listening.

背景 + 突发事件
when / while
进行时是“背景”（一段时间），一般过去时是打断它的“事件”（一下子）。
I was cooking when the phone rang.
我正在做饭，电话响了。
While we were waiting for the bus, it started to rain.
我们在等公交车的时候，开始下雨了。
while 后面通常接进行时（一段时间）；when 后面常接一般过去时（一个时刻）。
两件事同时进行
while + 两个进行时
While I was reading, my sister was playing computer games.
我在看书，妹妹在玩电脑游戏。
常见错误
I was watch TV.I was watching TV.
was 后面要跟 -ing，不能直接跟动词原形。
They was playing.They were playing.
复数和 you 用 were。
When I was arriving, she cooked.When I arrived, she was cooking.
短暂的动作（到达）用一般过去时，持续的动作（做饭）才用进行时。
I was knowing the answer.I knew the answer.
know、like、want 这类表示状态的动词一般不用进行时。

2. 否定句和疑问句
否定在 was / were 后加 not；疑问把 was / were 提到主语前。
- I wasn't listening.我刚才没在听。
- What were you doing yesterday afternoon?昨天下午你在做什么？
3. when / while：背景 + 事件
持续的背景用过去进行时，打断它的短暂事件用一般过去时。
- I was cooking when the phone rang.我正在做饭，电话响了。
- While we were waiting for the bus, it started to rain.我们在等公交车的时候，开始下雨了。
