Future · werden + verb
werden + the dictionary form at the end (Ich werde dir helfen) for promises, predictions and guesses. For plans German usually just uses the present.
Examples
- Ich werde dir helfen.I will help you.
- Morgen wird es regnen. It will rain tomorrow.
How it works
The future is werden + the infinitive (the dictionary form of the verb), which goes to the very end of the clause, like the second verb after a modal.
ich werde, du wirst, er/sie/es wird,
wir werden, ihr werdet, sie werden
Ich werde dir helfen.I will help you.
Morgen wird es regnen. It will rain tomorrow.
Wirst du zur Party kommen? Will you come to the party?
When to use it
promises:Ich werde dich nie vergessen.I'll never forget you.
predictions:Es wird regnen. It's going to rain.
guesses about now, with wohl:Sie wird wohl zu Hause sein. She's probably at home.
Plans
usually the present tense with a time word
Morgen fahre ich nach Berlin.I'm going to Berlin tomorrow.
German doesn't need werden when the time word already says "future".
WERDEN OR PASSIVE? — look at the end of the clause
werden + dictionary form (helfen) = future
werden + ge- form (geholfen) = passive (see Passive)
Common mistakes
Ich werde helfen dir.Ich werde dir helfen.
the second verb goes last
Ich will dir helfen means "I want to help you", not "I will".
Du werdest kommen.Du wirst kommen.
