da- and wo- words · darauf, worauf
For a thing, da + the preposition stands for it (Ich warte darauf — I'm waiting for it) and wo + the preposition asks about it (Worauf wartest du?). For people: auf ihn, auf wen.
Examples
- Ich warte darauf.I'm waiting for it.
- Worauf wartest du?What are you waiting for?
How it works
After a verb with a fixed preposition (warten auf, denken an — see Verbs with prepositions), German doesn't say "auf es" for a thing. It joins da- to the preposition; to ask about a thing, it joins wo-.
