Time prepositions · um, am, im, seit, vor
um acht Uhr, am Montag, im Mai — and seit + the present tense for something still going on: Ich wohne seit zwei Jahren hier.
Examples
- Der Film beginnt um acht Uhr.The film starts at eight o'clock.
- Ich wohne seit zwei Jahren in Berlin.I've been living in Berlin for two years.
How it works
English says "at eight", "on Monday", "in May". German has its own small words, and they don't map one to one.
Um
clock times
Am
days, dates and parts of the day
Im
months and seasons
Seit
since / for, with the PRESENT tense
Something that started in the past and is still going on:
I've been living in Berlin for two years.
I've been waiting for an hour.
Vor
ago (in front of the time)
AB, VON … BIS — from, until
After seit and vor
the dative (the form after mit, von, zu …): seit einem Jahr, vor zwei Wochen, seit zwei Jahren.
Common mistakes
still true: present
