jemand, niemand, etwas, nichts
jemand (someone) and niemand (no one) usually add -en as an object and -em after mit or helfen; etwas (something) and nichts (nothing) never change.
Examples
- Ist jemand da?Is anyone there?
- Ich sehe niemanden.I don't see anyone.
- Ich verstehe nichts.I don't understand anything.
People
jemand and niemand
niemand already means "not": never add nicht or kein to it.
The object forms
jemanden, jemandem Like der → den → dem, these two usually take an ending when they are not the subject:
The accusative (the object form, like den) and the dative (the form after mit, like dem) are the cases you already know from der Mann.
The ending is preferred in writing. Without it is correct too: Ich habe niemand gesehen. What is wrong is the wrong ending: mit niemanden.
Things
etwas and nichts
They never change, whatever their job: Ich habe etwas, mit etwas, für nichts.
Say not once
German says "not" once. nichts and niemand already carry it:
Common mistakes
What you'll practise
1. jemand / niemand, jemanden, jemandem
Subject jemand / niemand; as the object usually jemanden / niemanden; after mit or helfen jemandem / niemandem. The bare form is also correct.
- Kennst du jemanden hier?Do you know anyone here?
2. etwas / nichts
etwas (something) and nichts (nothing) never change; nichts already means not, so no nicht beside it.
- Ich habe etwas gekauft.I bought something.
