Clock times and dates (Viertel nach, am dritten Mai)
Viertel nach, Viertel vor and halb for the clock; der erste, der dritte for the day of the month; am dritten Mai for "on 3 May".

The clock
Viertel and halb In everyday speech Germans count quarters and halves:
halb looks ahead to the next hour: halb vier is 3:30, not 4:30. Viertel vor also names the next hour. Ask with Wie spät ist es? and answer with Es ist …; "at" a time is um: um Viertel nach drei.
Ordinals
der erste, der zweite An ordinal (a number for a place in a row: first, second) adds -te up to 19 and -ste from 20:
erste, dritte, siebte and achte are the irregular ones. Written, the number takes a full stop: der 3. Mai.
Dates
Heute ist der dritte Mai
On a day
am dritten Mai "On" a date is am, and after am the ordinal ends in -en:

3:15 is Viertel nach drei, 3:45 is Viertel vor vier, 3:30 is halb vier: vor and halb name the next hour.
- Der Zug kommt um Viertel vor neun.The train comes at a quarter to nine.
2. der erste, der dritte, der zwanzigste
First, second … add -te up to 19 and -ste from 20; erste, dritte, siebte, achte are irregular. Heute ist der dritte Mai.
- Heute ist der zwanzigste Juli.Today is the twentieth of July.
3. am dritten Mai
On a date is am, and the ordinal after am ends in -en: am ersten Juni, am dritten Mai.
- Der Kurs beginnt am ersten Juni.The course starts on the first of June.
