Articles & gender · der / die / das, ein / eine
Name things and say what they are. Every German noun carries a gender, and the article — der / die / das for "the", ein / eine for "a" — is what tells you which.
Examples
- Der Tisch ist groß.The table is big.
- Das ist eine Lampe. That is a lamp.
- Die Kinder spielen. The children are playing.

What's that?
That's a table. The table is new.
And that?
That's a lamp.
Is that a book?
No, that's not a book. It's a notebook.
Notice that Tisch took ein / der, Lampe took eine, and Heft took ein again. That is not random — each noun has a fixed gender, and the article is how you say it out loud.
The articles
Masculine and neuter share ein; the plural die covers all three genders.
The plural
die for every gender:
Those aren't books.
The noun's own plural (Tisch → Tische, Buch → Bücher) has several patterns and gets its own lesson at A2. For now, learn it together with the noun: der Tisch, die Tische.
Endings that give the gender away
→ feminine
→ neuter
→ masculine

Typical mistakes
Never store a noun without its article — you will need the gender for every case later.
"Girl" is neuter: the -chen ending outranks the meaning.
What you'll practise
1. Definite article ("the")
der (m) / die (f) / das (n), matched to the noun's gender: der Mann, die Frau, das Kind.
- Der Hund schläft.The dog is sleeping.
- Das Fenster ist offen. The window is open.
2. Indefinite article ("a / an")
ein for masculine and neuter, eine for feminine: ein Mann, eine Frau, ein Kind.
- Das ist ein Buch. That is a book.
- Ich habe eine Idee.I have an idea.
3. Plural · die for every gender
All plurals take die, and ein has no plural: die Kinder, but bare "Kinder" for "children".
- Die Häuser sind alt.The houses are old.
- Das sind Bücher. Those are books.
